Australia’s cricket squad encounters another setback with T20I skipper Mitchell Marsh testing positive for COVID-19 just before the start of a three-match T20I series against the West Indies.

This marks the third instance of an Australian player contracting the virus this Australian summer.

Despite the positive test, Marsh has been given the green light to participate in the opening T20I against the West Indies on February 9 at the Bellerive Oval in Hobart.

However, he will need to adhere to specific protocols outlined by Cricket Australia, including using a separate dressing room and maintaining a safe distance from his teammates throughout the match.

Other Australian T20 players affected by the COVID-19 pandemic include Cameron Green and Jos Inglish, in addition to Mitchell Marsh. Due to the pandemic’s effects, Green couldn’t join in the post-ODI series celebrations against the West Indies.

Despite these challenges, Marsh’s leadership qualities have been acknowledged, leading him to serve as the de facto captain of the T20I squad following Aaron Finch’s retirement.

His recent on-field performances have earned him the prestigious Allan Border Medal at the awards ceremony held on January 31.

The upcoming T20I series against the West Indies and New Zealand holds significant importance for Australia, especially with the T20 World Cup 2024 scheduled for June.
